Department of Community Medicine

Community Medicine is the branch of medicine that deals with population and comprises of doctors who try to measure the needs of population, both sick and well, who plan and administer services to meet those needs and those who are engaged in research and teaching in the field.

Globally, Community Medicine is becoming increasingly recognized as an academic as well as a public health discipline with its own unique collection of knowledge, skills and attitudes. Through the Department of Community Medicine, PK Das Institute of Medical Science envisages the medical professional graduate students to attain the role of social physicians and strengthen their practice of primary care and developing their leadership, teaching and research skills.

VISION

The department vision is to create an innovative, rural based, primary health care oriented and value based medical education to train the “Doctors of Tomorrow" who are competent to function as :

Provision of cost effective primary health care strategies characterized by equity, intersectoral coordination and community participation

At the end of the course in community medicine the student shall acquire knowledge, attitude and skill required to function as a care provider, decision maker, communicator, community leader and manager to facilitate the delivery of primary health care in rural and urban settings.

Medical Rating for Anatomy

The medical rating is calculating based in the functionality and individual branches performances, but mostly its review and feed backs are to be considered for getting better rating. The medical council will evaluate all the aspects of services and facilities to ensure the quality of education to students.

The Facilities

Demonstration Rooms

Two demonstration rooms, each of 60 sq. mts. accommodating 75 students each and equipped with appropriate audio visual aids, (1 OHP & 1 LCD projector) add to the teaching ambiance of the department.

Student Laboratory

Laboratory with an area of 200 sq.mt, accommodating 75 students and equipped with water supply, sinks, electric point, and cupboard for storage of microscope, slides etc.

Museum

The excellent museum spread over 127 Sq.mt exhibits more than 200 specimens and models which are arranged according to topics like nutrition, immunization, family planning, disinfectants, insecticides, substance abuse, environment and sanitation and public health important drugs. The museum also displays public health important charts, posters and catalogs.

Rural Health Training Centre

Rural health training center is situated at Thiruvilwamala situated at Pazhayannur taluk of Thrissur district, which is 22 kms from the hospital. Routine activities include OPD services including basic lab facilities, ANC clinic (Thursday), and immunization (Thursday). Health education sessions are conducted on all important health days.

Department also has two rural health centers functioning at Pazhayannur and Chuduvalathur.

Urban Health Training Centre

Urban health center under the Dept. Of Community Medicine is situated at Aarani which is 4 km away from our institution. It comes under Shoranur municipality covering 32.33 sq. km area. Activities are daily free OPD services including basic investigations and medicines, specialty clinics like ANC and Pediatric consultation on Monday, immunization on Wednesday and Physician consultation on Friday.

Transportation Facilities

There are regular pickup and drop facilities arranged at frequent intervals by the institution vehicles including buses, minibuses, jeeps & cars as per the timing and facilities of the staff and student.

Department Library Cum Seminar Room

Department library with a total surface area of 54 Sq.mt. having collections of 96 exclusive books on public health and biostatistics for departmental reference.

The multi-purpose table made available in the department library cum seminar room can provide seating capacity for 25 persons for the conduct of intra-departmental seminars and academic discussions.

Department Research Lab

One research lab of 55 sq.mt area equipped with advanced instruments related with public health and for research purpose. It also displays important charts of public health importance. Research lab will conduct experiments and research related to :

General Health Camp - October

General health camp was conducted by Department of community Medicine of P K Das Institute of Medical Sciences on 29/10/2016 at U. P School, Kavalappara. The camp was inaugurated by the ward member Mr. Rajesh . There were 80 poor patients attended the camp and general health check up was provided by Dr. Amruth, Asst. Professor from the Dept. Of community medicine. Services provided through the camp were health check up, basic laboratory facilities, free medicines and referral services. First batch of BSC nursing students from Nehru College of nursing conducted a medical skit on Drug Addiction. They also organized an exhibition on Lifestyle disorders and Nutrition. The following Guests Mrs. Saraladevi HM and Mr. Vijayakumar PTA president of U.P school Kavalapara attended the inaugural function.

Global Hand-Washing Day - 2016

Department of Community Medicine, P K Das Institute of Medical Sciences had organized Global Hand-Washing Day – 2016 on 15 th October 2016 at P K Das Hospital and Canteen.

Theme for 2016 was “Make Hand-Washing A Habit”

An awareness program was conducted by Dept. of Community Medicine involving the second year MBBS students to sensitize the general public and canteen staff regarding the importance of Hand-Washing in preventing spread of infectious diseases.

The program was attended by Dr. Dileepan, Medical Superintendent, Dr. Malini Kar, HOD of Community Medicine, Dr. Rajesh Gaikwad, Dr. Amruth M, Dr. Akshath Kumar, Dr. Anup G, Dr. Sruthi M V and staff of Community Medicine.
