The Medical Council of India, by the MCI Regulations on Graduate Medical Education, 1997, made it mandatory for all medical colleges to establish Medical Education Units (MEUs) or departments in order to enable faculty members to avail modern education technology for teaching. In order to boost this activity, MCI has been conducting Faculty Development Programs through selected Regional Centers, since July 2009. These Centers are located at institutions which have trained manpower in Medical Education Technologies (MET).
Medical Council of India has emphasized that the faculty members should avail of modern educational technology while teaching the students and to attain this objective, Medical education Units/Departments be established in all medical colleges for faculty development and provide learning resource material for teachers.

In order to boost this activity, MCI has been conducting Faculty Development Programs through selected Regional Centers, since July 2009. The MCI strategy involves preparation of training modules by experts followed by training of faculty of MCI Regional Centers for Education Technologies. The Regional Centers will train the faculty of Medical Education Units of colleges under them and finally the Medical Education Units will train their colleagues and facilitate the implementation of these modules with the help of Regional Centers.
Objectives to be fulfilled in setting up a MEU as per MCI guidelines include:
- To sensitize teachers about new concepts in teaching and assessment methods.
- To develop knowledge and clinical skills required for performing the role of competent and effective teacher, administrator, researcher and mentor.
- To assist clinicians to acquire competency in communication and behavioral skills.
- To update knowledge using modern information and research methodology tools.

- It should concentrate on the teaching- learning needs of the students and hence facilitate the same.
- It should provide instructional design.
- It should focus on newer learning technologies such as simulation and e-learning.
- It should develop guidelines for student evaluation and curriculum development.
- It should provide on the job training or formal courses for teachers.
BCME Organized By MEU
Conducted on 9th, 10th, and 11th April 2025

On Day-1, the Pretest was followed by Ice breaking session and group dynamics. It was well appreciated and it set that precedence for the sessions which followed. The other sessions on that day included topics (i) learning domains (ii) goals, roles, and competency (iii) teaching learning method (TLM) and assessment, which were taken by various resource faculties. Tea breaks and Lunch was evenly spaced out to break the monotony. All sessions were clubbed with group activities and group discussions, which helped the participants understand the practical applications of every topic. All groups were encouraged to choose a competency topic, for which different TLM and assessment tools were derived and noted.
Day 2 started with feedback from the participants which was positive. (i)AETCOM, (ii) TLM, (iii) Assessment plan iv) making a lesson plan and skill assessment were the other topics for the day. It followed with a visit to the skill lab and demonstration of certifiable skills by the participants in groups. Role play topics based on AETCOM were allotted to all the groups. An interesting skit for the role play was performed on day-3, which were followed by discussion on pros and cons by the other groups.
Day-3 was equally interesting and started with feedback from participants and feedback on SDL by the students, AETCOM role play and visit to skill lab. Participants were stressed upon the increase in utilization of skill lab and the various certifiable skills according to the NMC by each department were pointed out. Lesson plan, networking, mentoring and drafting schedule for phase wise competencies was conducted on Day-3.
This was followed by posttest, certificate distribution and felicitation. Participants were encouraged to take up more medical education courses like ACME. The MEU received incredibly positive feedback from all the participants. Few drawbacks were noted by MEU which included short term malfunctioning of audio aids, which will be looked upon and rectified by the next MEU Faculty Development Program.
