MEDICAL EDUCATION UNIT @ PKDIMS

The Medical Council of India, by the MCI Regulations on Graduate Medical Education, 1997, made it mandatory for all medical colleges to establish Medical Education Units (MEUs) or departments in order to enable faculty members to avail modern education technology for teaching. In order to boost this activity, MCI has been conducting Faculty Development Programmes through selected Regional Centres, since July 2009. These Centres are located at institutions which have trained manpower in Medical Education Technologies (MET).

Medical Council of India has emphasized that the faculty members should avail of modern educational technology while teaching the students and to attain this objective, Medical education Units/Departments be established in all medical colleges for faculty development and provide learning resource material for teachers.

The MCI strategy involves preparation of training modules by experts followed by training of faculty of MCI Regional Centres for Education Technologies. The Regional Centres will train the faculty of Medical Education Units of colleges under them and finally the Medical Education Units will train their colleagues and facilitate the implementation of these modules with the help of Regional Centres.

Objectives to be fulfilled in setting up a MEU as per MCI guidelines include:

  • To sensitize teachers about new concepts in teaching and assessment methods
  • To develop knowledge and clinical skills required for performing the role of competent and effective teacher, administrator, researcher and mentor
  • To assist clinicians to acquire competency in communication and behavioural skills
  • To update knowledge using modern information and research methodology tools

Keeping these directives from MCI in mind, a Medical Education Unit (MEU) has been constituted in PKDIMS, with Principal, Dr. Gopakumaran Kartha as the Chairman and Dr. P. K. Ramakrishnan, Associate Professor in Anatomy as the Coordinator. The MEU of PKDIMS will be coming under the MCI Regional Centre at Government Medical College, Kozhikode.

ROLE OF MEDICAL EDUCATION UNIT @ PKDIMS

In contemporary medical education and research, the role of a medical education unit (MEU) is varied, from research and teaching to nurturing a fulfilling career. Some of the important attributes our medical education unit are as follows;

  • The MEU should be able to create a culture of educational research.
  • It should be able to keep the faculty aware of the on-going research in the field
  • It should be able to generate publications and resources in medical education
  • It should concentrate on the teaching- learning needs of the students and hence facilitate the same
  • It should provide instructional design
  • It should focus on newer learning technologies such as simulation and e-learning
  • It should develop guidelines for student evaluation and curriculum development
  • It should provide on the job training or formal courses for teachers

Currently our main focus is on faculty development as this is the area of greatest need.
